Churchgoers Offered $1 Off on Taxi Fare

HIGH POINT, N.C. — Taxicab passengers headed for church can put an extra dollar in the collection plate--or their pockets--on Sundays thanks to a new fare discount approved by the City Council.
The discount was offered last week by the city’s only cab company, Red Bird Cab Co., when it received approval for a rate increase, City Atty. Bryant Aldridge said Tuesday.
Council member David Baker requested the discount for people who ride taxicabs to church because buses do not run on Sundays in the central North Carolina city, the attorney said.
The dollar-off deal applies during Sunday morning church hours and may be denied if the driver suspects the rider is not going to church, Mayor Roy Culler said.
