Baseball’s affirmative action program is making progress despite only 2 of the last 20 managerial vacancies being filled by minorities, Commissioner Peter Ueberroth said.
“Two out of 20 is too low, but blacks have been shut out off the field,” Ueberroth told a group of about 1,000 people at the National Assn. of Black Journalists convention. “Four others have had offers, and there’ll be more.”
Ueberroth mentioned Bill Robinson, a batting and first base coach with the New York Mets, as a likely managerial candidate in the near future. The only minority managers presently in the majors are Frank Robinson of the Baltimore Orioles and Cookie Rojas of the California Angels.
