Olajuwon Reportedly Wants New Contract

HOUSTON — Houston Rockets center Akeem Olajuwon has demanded to renegotiate his contract, which already will pay him a total of more than $23 million, a Houston television station reported Friday.
“Akeem is seeking to renegotiate because he wants to be paid up to par with other superstars around the NBA,” a source told KRIV-TV.
Rocket General Manager Ray Patterson declined comment to the Associated Press.
Olajuwon, the Rockets’ first-round draft pick in 1984, signed an eight-year extension in 1986, putting him under contract to the Rockets through the 1997-1998 season.
The source told KRIV that Olajuwon was upset that a player like David Robinson, who will join the San Antonio Spurs next season, will earn more as a rookie than Olajuwon will in his sixth National Basketball Assn. season.
Olajuwon will earn $1.525 million this season and will reach the $2-million figure for the 1990-1991 season.
