Cauthen Injured as Mount Falls

GOODWOOD, England — American Steve Cauthen, Britain’s champion jockey, was taken to a hospital unconscious after a bad fall during a race today.
A hospital spokesman said Cauthen had suffered “a good blow to the head” but X-rays had revealed no other injury. “We’ll be keeping him in overnight for observation but there are no broken bones,” the spokesman said. Course officials said Cauthen’s mount, Preziosa, fell and brought down another horse, Cuva, three furlongs from the finish of the mile-and-a-half Country Club Hotels Handicap for 3-year-olds at Goodwood. Cauthen was left motionless on the ground after both horses rolled over him.
