Hitler’s Bunker Is Being Demolished

EAST BERLIN — The concrete bunker where Adolf Hitler shot himself as the Russians advanced into the Nazi capital is being demolished to make way for a park, East Berlin building officials said Wednesday.
“We are blowing everything up, every last bit will be detonated so no keepsake remains,” East Berlin building chief Ehrhardt Gisske told a reporter.
Workmen are drilling holes for explosive charges in the 13-foot-thick roof of the bunker, where Hitler took his life April 30, 1945. It is near the Berlin Wall.
“We can do history no greater justice than by placing a park there in the middle of a wonderful housing area,” said building site chief Fritz Oske.
