Deciding Dana Point Cityhood--and More

To the South Coast residents between San Clemente and Three Arch Bay, The Times’ 128-page “Celebrate” in recognition of the Orange County centennial (May 22) was of particular interest. We coastalites seem right in step.
Last November, in a record turnout, we voted for control of our own destiny by joining the Dana Point quest for cityhood. Cityhood is on our June 7 ballots.
A new city and local control is in bright prospect. Ranchers and townsfolk in south Los Angeles county also once voted for local control, seceding to form their own county of Orange. It’s an old Orange County tradition.
Some neighbors still ask, “Why can’t we remain unincorporated?” The question seems redundant. Coastal communities are destined to become either their own city with an elected council to manage their interests, or be swallowed up by a much larger megalopolis. That apparently is the county plan.
