Federal Judge to Begin Prison Sentence Today

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — U.S. District Judge Walter L. Nixon Jr. will report to prison today to begin a five-year sentence, his lawyer said Tuesday.
Attorney Boyce Holleman said Nixon will surrender to authorities at the federal minimum-security prison at Eglin Air Force Base at Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., while efforts are under way to overturn his perjury conviction.
Nixon, 59, was convicted on Feb. 9, 1986, of twice lying to a special federal grand jury looking into his testimony involving a state drug-smuggling case.
