Local News in Brief : Water Cleanup May Widen

The federal Superfund cleanup of San Fernando Valley ground water--which will feature treatment plants in North Hollywood and Burbank--could include a third treatment system for Glendale and Los Angeles wells near Griffith Park, officials said Tuesday.
Patti Cleary, a scientist with the federal Environmental Protection Agency, said a treatment system serving the downstream area may be the logical next step in purging chemical pollutants from the water on which Los Angeles, Burbank, Glendale and the Crescenta Valley County Water District depend for part of their supply.
The ground water, which contains traces of industrial solvents, flows through well fields in North Hollywood and Burbank to wells in Glendale and Los Angeles near the Los Angeles River.
Early this summer, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is to begin operating a $2.5-million aeration tower in North Hollywood that will cleanse some of the water and slow its migration toward Burbank and Glendale.
