Through its new “Secret Word” promotion, jazz radio station KIFM-FM (98.1) is attempting to bribe its listeners into reading their dictionaries.
Each weekday during morning drive hours (6-10 a.m.), a different “word of the day” is announced on the air, along with its meaning. Then, during the midday (10 a.m.-2 p.m.) show, the word is used in a phrase and the first caller to correctly define the word wins a dinner for two at a local restaurant.
Sample word: felodese (one who commits suicide). Sample phrase: A felodese from Illinois was unable to take the stand, despite the fact that he was involved in the crime.
