Movie sound specialist Fred Hynes has been named the fifth annual recipient of the special Gordon E. Sawyer Award by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the academy announced Tuesday. The award is named for the last sound director of the Samuel Goldwyn Studio, and its function is to recognize longterm accomplishments by an individual who has made outstanding contributions toward the advancement of the sciences or technology of movies. Hynes is a five-time Oscar winner in the best sound category, for “Oklahoma!,” “South Pacific,” “The Alamo,” “West Side Story” and “The Sound of Music.”
