College Basketball Roundup : Seton Hall Bids for Respect, Beating Pitt, 89-72

Seton Hall finally found a finishing kick.

The Pirates, who folded in the final 10 minutes of six big games this season, finished off sixth-ranked Pittsburgh, 89-72, Monday night in a Big East game at East Rutherford, N.J.

“Our record could be a whole lot better if we played 40 minutes of basketball against the Syracuses, St, John’s and the others,” said Mark Bryant, who scored 32 points for Seton Hall (18-10 overall, 6-7 in the Big East).

Seton Hall shut down Pitt (19-4, 9-3) in the stretch, holding the Panthers to one basket in the final seven minutes in outscoring them 25-6, including 18-2 at the end.

Bradley 122, Detroit 107--Hersey Hawkins scored a career-high 63 points, breaking Oscar Robertson’s Missouri Valley Conference record, and the Braves outpointed the Titans at Detroit.

Hawkins, the leading scorer in the nation with a 34.4 average, broke Robertson’s record of 62 points set in 1960 against North Texas State when Big O played for Cincinnati. Donald Powell added 21 points for the Braves (20-4).

Michigan 77, Michigan State 67--Glen Rice scored 33 points and the seventh-ranked Wolverines scored a Big Ten victory over the Spartans at Ann Arbor, Mich.
