The U.N. Human Rights Commission strongly condemned what it described as Israel’s “iron fist” policy of “killing, wounding, arresting and torturing thousands of Palestinians” in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip--the 20th straight year it has leveled similar criticism. But Western delegates to the 43-nation commission based in Geneva abstained or voted against resolutions accusing Israel of violating human rights in the territories, saying the measures were couched in unacceptable language. In another matter, the commission expressed concern over the deadlock in Salvadoran talks between the government and guerrillas.
