Finnish President Mauno Koivisto was reelected to a second six-year term, winning a second-round victory in voting by the nation’s electoral college. Koivisto, a Social Democrat, garnered 1.5 million votes in a general election two weeks ago, but he fell just short of the absolute majority needed to win without turning the race over to the electoral college. Conservative Prime Minister Harri Holkeri, who challenged Koivisto along with three other contenders, released his delegates after the first round of electoral college balloting.
