Oates Also Had a Big Turnaround

Equally as incredible as the scoring turnaround in Super Bowl XXII was Bob Oates’ turnaround in his appraisal of the Redskins as a worthy team. Before the game, the Redskins were “the fifth-best team in the league this season, if that.” After the game, “they were the most lethal all-around football team since the Pittsburgh Steelers of the 1970s.”
How are the four teams better? Because they have a great talent such as a John Elway or a Jerry Rice? Why have sportswriters become so hyped up with individual talents, while overlooking the management’s and coaches’ varied combinations of players and strategies that is the true team concept.
