Defending Lloyd Webber
In one breath Sullivan moans about not seeing anything new on Broadway, in the next he poisons the minds of unsuspecting readers about one of the few really new and different productions playing there.
“Starlight Express” is definitely high tech, with brilliant costumes and set design, dramatic lighting, fiber optics by the mile, the excitement of athletic skating to pulsing music!
Give some credit for what was accomplished. Perhaps the ‘80s have come upon Sullivan too fast. It’s only 1988.
Maybe this play was some sort of symbol to him of the decline and fall of theater and society in general. It seems to me his perspective is unreasonable in this case.
