History students from Gompers Secondary School will represent California in April in the National High School Bicentennial Competition on the U.S. Constitution in Washington. The Gompers team won the state competition Friday night in Sacramento, placing first among teams from each of the state’s 45 congressional districts. Gompers represents the 44th district of Representative Jim Bates (D-San Diego).
The state competition challenged high school students on the Constitution, dividing the 20 Gompers students evenly into five teams. Each team was interviewed by judges as well as giving a presentation on a prepared topic. History teacher David Vigilante coached the Gompers students.
Claremont High School of Claremont in Los Angeles County took second place, and Grant Davis High School of Modesto was third. University of San Diego High School, which represented the 41st congressional district, finished fourth. Poway High School, representing the 45th district, also participated.
