BARBER: CELLO SONATA. HARRIS: DUO FOR CELLO AND PIANO. REALE: PIANO TRIO. SHORTER WORKS BY CRESTON, THOMSON, STEVENS AND RIEGGER. Mirecourt Trio; Johana Harris, piano. Audax-239. This thoughtfully conceived anthology makes a brief stop at Paul Reale’s 1980 Piano Trio before moving on to a valuable survey of overlooked and underrecorded 20th-Century American cello music. Harris and Terry King of the Mirecourt offer quietly glowing performances of Barber’s early (1932) lyric effusion and the 1975 Roy Harris duo, which occasionally sacrifices momentum for melody. King and John Jensen dispatch the miniatures by Thomson, Creston, Riegger and Halsey Stevens. With violinist Kenneth Goldsmith, they deliver the goods for the Reale, which mingles rapture and a touch of Mozartean pastiche. An absorbing collection in acceptable sound.
