The ‘Chess Sound’
I read with interest Terry Atkinson’s comments about Chess Records’ “The Best of Chess” R&B; reissue series (Replay, Jan. 10).
However, Atkinson incorrectly attributed the “Chess sound” to Clarence (Frogman) Henry, the Monotones and Johnnie and Joe.
Henry recorded in New Orleans, the others in New York City. Leonard Chess just wisely acquired the rights and released the songs on his labels.
