Children With AIDS Expected to Triple

WASHINGTON — The number of young children with AIDS will more than triple by 1991, threatening to overburden the nation’s health and foster-care systems, a congressional report said Monday.
“Many families and the communities they live in are ill-equipped to handle the devastating financial, emotional and physical toll of AIDS. The enormous cost of caring for these children will fall on public health programs that have been cut to the bone,” Rep. George Miller (D-Martinez) said in releasing the report.
According to the committee, of the estimated 279,000 individuals expected to contract AIDS by 1991, 3,000 will be under age 13. Pediatric AIDS cases now account for 2% of the 48,574 diagnosed cases, it said.
