The estranged wife of Utah Jazz center Darryl Dawkins died with a bottle of prescription pills near her body and might have committed suicide, according to New Jersey authorities.
“We’re considering it a possible suicide,” said Mercer County Prosecutor Paul T. Koenig Jr.
He said investigators found the pills near the bed where the body of Kelly Barnes Dawkins, 28, was found Sunday morning at her parents’ home in Trenton, N.J. An autopsy did not pinpoint a cause of death. Toxicology tests must be conducted to determine if she died of the drug.
George Mertz, a spokesman for the New Jersey Nets, said that Darryl Dawkins had told him before Dawkins was traded to Utah that he was planning to file for divorce.
