Mercury General’s income jumped 434.8% to $5.83 million in the third quarter. The Los Angeles automobile insurer said that in the year-ago quarter it recorded a $10.4-million addition to loss reserves and that, exclusive of that charge, the difference in operating earnings for the two quarters would not be that great.
