An insignificant amount of “gaseous products” leaked into the atmosphere after a Soviet underground nuclear test on Aug. 2 but there was no radioactive fallout, the Tass news agency reported. During the test on Novaya Zemlya island, all necessary precautions were taken to prevent radioactive fallout and the local population was not subjected to any danger, Tass said. State Department spokesman Charles Redman said on Thursday the Soviet test had released radioactive debris into the atmosphere beyond Soviet borders. This did not pose a health hazard but violated the 1963 Limited Test Ban Treaty, he said.
