United Brands’ income dropped 11% to $31.8 million for the second quarter. The Cincinnati company blamed the earnings drop on lower frozen-dessert sales due to intensified competition and the effect of strikes at two meat plants. Earnings improved for Chiquita bananas and the company’s Central American operations. Revenue was down 8%.
