LOS ANGELES — A Florida man convicted of embezzling $1.3 million from a Santa Ana escrow company was sentenced Monday to serve 10 years in federal prison.
U.S. District Judge Harry L. Hupp ordered James Leroy Fletcher, 41, to prison for his role in defrauding the Western Mutual Escrow Corp. in 1983.
Fletcher, who pleaded guilty to three counts of wire fraud, sold an investment program backed by phony stock certificates and funneled the investors’ money through the escrow company, a grand jury indictment said.
Earlier this year, Fletcher was arrested in Singapore and extradited to the United States. It was the first time a U.S. citizen was extradited by Singapore officials, Assistant U.S. Atty. Anita H. Dymant said.
