Romanian swimmer Noemi Lung and Soviet gymnast Yury Korolev became the first triple gold-medal winners in the World University Games at Zagbreb, Yugoslavia.
Lung, an 18-year-old from Bucharest, collected a gold in the women’s 400-meter medley after having won the women’s 200-meter medley and the 400-meter freestyle.
Korolev won his third gold in the rings in the men’s individual apparatus finals, but he had to settle for three silvers and a bronze in the other four events.
After six days of competition, the Soviet Union held a commanding lead with nine gold medals to four for Romania and three for the United States.
In basketball competition, Perry McDonald of Georgetown scored 18 points to lead the United States to a 98-57 victory over Belgium.
