Cougar Season

John Laughlin (Letters, May 22), congratulates the “professionals” of the California Fish and Game Commission for their decision permitting sport hunting of cougars.
Such congratulations would be laughable if they weren’t based in cynicism. A majority of the commission--appointees of the Deukmejian Administration--overruled public testimony and opinion when they reinstituted cougar hunting. Laughlin’s definition of “professionals” would be better spelled “special interests.”
A few game hunters will obtain their trophies at the cost to wildlife and the majority of Californians. So much for “resource management.”
