Southern Methodist University’s board of governors has demanded that Gov. Bill Clements be specific about his claim that some members of the board knew about a decision to continue improper cash payments to athletes.
Clements, a member of the board before his election as Texas governor, has repeatedly refused to name names.
Meanwhile, the Dallas Times Herald reported that former Dallas Mayor Robert Folsom and prominent oilman Edwin L. Cox were among other SMU officials who joined Clements in that decision after the school was put on probation in 1985.
Folsom denied knowing of the continued payments, which prompted an investigation that resulted in the harshest action ever taken by the NCAA, including cancellation of the school’s 1987 football season.
