An illegal immigrant from Mexico was crushed to death and his brother was seriously injured when a wall fell on them as they were remodeling a building in South-Central Los Angeles to meet earthquake standards. Hilario Chavez, 31, was pronounced dead at Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital after the accident at 8514 S. Vermont Ave. His brother, Anacleto Chavez, 43, also an illegal, suffered a crushed spine and was taken to County-USC Medical Center, where he was in serious condition. Investigators said the brothers were helping to demolish a wall of an old unreinforced brick building when a piece of an adjacent wall fell on them. The Los Angeles district attorney’s office was investigating the incident.
