A pipe bomb exploded in the driveway of a Mission Viejo home early Monday, causing substantial damage to a car but no injuries to anyone inside the house, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
The bomb exploded about 1:25 a.m. in the driveway of a house in the 27000 block of Betanzos, said Lt. Larry Richy. Sheriff’s deputies who responded to the call summoned the bomb squad, which determined that the device was a pipe bomb, he said.
No one was nearby when the device exploded and caused heavy damage to the rear of a car, Richy said. Fragments of the bomb were found up to 275 feet away, sheriff’s officials said.
Authorities did not release the name of the family in the house or their address.
Investigators have no suspects and have not determined a motive, Richy said. “There is nothing to indicate that there was any particular motive or purpose for picking that residence,” he said.
