The Republican Party outspent the Democrats nearly 5 to 1--$209.5 million to $43.5 million--in last year’s elections, and to sharpen the sting of losing control of the Senate, ended the year with twice as much debt--$8.4 million versus $4 million--as their opponents, records show. The National Republican Senatorial Committee, criticized for giving its workers post-election bonuses, was responsible for most of the debt, owing $5.4 million, the most of any of the six national-level Democratic and GOP committees, according to reports filed with the Federal Election Commission.
