Gen. Hendrik van den Bergh, who headed South Africa’s Bureau of State Security in the 1970s, has announced plans to run for Parliament as a member of the right-wing Conservative Party. He told Johannesburg’s Sunday Times that he no longer supports the policies of the governing National Party. The Conservative Party opposes all moves to reform apartheid. Over the years, opponents charge, Van den Bergh’s police agency has been involved in the detention, questioning and torture of black militants. The agency also was implicated in a 1970s campaign that used secret government funds to promote South Africa’s image abroad.
