A 30-year-old bicyclist from Irvine was listed in critical condition with “major injuries” Sunday after he apparently strayed out of the bicycle lanes into the path of a car on Santiago Canyon Road in eastern Orange County, California Highway Patrol officials said.
Andrew Durham was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana after being treated by paramedics at the scene of the accident, a hospital spokeswoman said.
According to the CHP dispatcher, Durham was riding his bicycle north on Santiago Canyon Road, south of Chapman Avenue, when he apparently strayed into the traffic lanes. The driver of the car braked and skidded 100 feet before hitting the bike.
Durham was thrown about 100 feet and suffered major injuries, CHP officials said. The driver of the car was not injured.
The driver was not cited and an investigation was continuing, CHP officials said.
