Corona Trails Bowling Leader McDowell by 36 Pins

Marc McDowell, the 1986 Rookie of the Year, took over the lead after the third round Thursday afternoon in the $125,000 Greater Los Angeles Open at Torrance.
McDowell, of Madison, Wis., averaged 232.89 for the first 18 games and had the lead in the 160-man field with a pinfall total of 4,192.
Ricky Corona of Diamond Bar was 36 pins back at 4,156.
Pete Weber of St. Louis, a nine-time Professional Bowlers Assn. champion, remained in third place with 4,152.
Parker Bohn III of Freehold, N.J., and John Gant of Independence, Ky., rounded out the top five with 4,127 and 4,117, respectively. Gant, the 1984 PBA Rookie of the Year, averaged better than 214 last year to lead the PBA.
The top 24 bowlers advanced to match play competition, which began Thursday night. Among those failing to advance were George Branham III of Arleta who finished 83rd and Earl Anthony who was 62nd.
