Forty-four people were killed in traffic accidents on California roads between 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve and 6 a.m. Sunday, while 1,794 motorists were arrested for drunk driving, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said. Traffic accidents took the lives of 45 people during the same period in 1984, the last year for which comparable statistics were available.
