The World : Irish Party Loses Majority

Irish Prime Minister Garret FitzGerald lost his parliamentary majority when a legislator resigned from his coalition, increasing the prospects of a general election 10 months ahead of schedule. The resignation of Alice Glenn, a right-wing member of FitzGerald’s Fine Gael party, left him with 83 votes in the Dail, or Parliament, equal to the combined opposition. Political analysts see an increased likelihood of the government falling in January, when FitzGerald must present the 1987-88 budget to the Dail.
