The Suriname government declared a state of emergency in remote areas of the country after 21 people were killed in four days of fighting between the military and guerrillas. The fighting centered on the towns of Moengo and Albina and villages south of Paramaribo, the capital. The rebels are led by a former soldier, Ronny Brunshwijk. They are seeking to oust the government of Lt. Col. Desi Bouterse, who seized power in 1980 in a bloodless coup.
