Rossmoor : Recount Finds Celano Still Finishing Sixth
- Share via
In last month’s race for five seats on the Rossmoor Community Services District’s board of directors, Vincent S. Celano finished sixth in a field of eight candidates--by just eight votes.
He demanded a recount. And after three days of manually tallying the punched ballots, an election recount board declared that Celano had, indeed, finished sixth--by nine votes.
Clair H. Weeks captured the fifth and last seat ahead of Celano, with 2,246 votes to his 2,237, the recount found. Election-night totals had shown Weeks winning 2,243 to 2,235.
The unsuccessful recount bid cost Celano $500, said Rosalyn Lever, the county’s chief of election operations. “He paid for two days, and we didn’t think it would take this long. It has been going very slowly . . . (so) we are not charging him for today.”
Voters cast 5,444 ballots in the community services district’s 16 precincts, Lever noted. Had the recount changed the election results, the county would have picked up the tab.
