Police Chief Daryl F. Gates said Los Angeles drivers can take their choice between tickets or turkeys for the Thanksgiving holiday. Declaring war on the drinking driver, Gates promised increased enforcement of drunk-driving laws, with special attention to traffic violations. But at the same time, the chief said, a special motorcycle officer dubbed “The Blue Knight” will be watching drivers who display safe driving habits, and will issue them certificates which can be exchanged for free holiday turkeys. “Our goal is zero traffic deaths,” Gates said in announcing the campaign, “because we care.”
