KODIAK, Alaska — A low-flying Coast Guard helicopter with six people aboard, including a doctor, crashed in flames on a tiny deserted island while trying to reach an isolated village on a medical mission, officials said today.
The Sikorsky HH-3F chopper plowed into Ugak Island late Sunday on its way to the village of Akhiok. Three bodies were found today in the wreckage along the beach of the uninhabited rugged island that rises out of the North Pacific about 40 miles south of the town of Kodiak.
