The resignation of Douglas P. Wheeler as executive director of the Sierra Club was announced in San Francisco by the organization’s president, Lawrence Downing, who said Wheeler was leaving to “pursue other interests in the fields of conservation and philanthropy.” Wheeler, 44, the club’s third executive director, had held his post for a little more than a year. He took office July 1, 1985, succeeding J. Michael McCloskey, who became chairman of the organization after serving as executive director since 1969. Downing said the Siera Club’s board asked McCloskey to resume the executive directorship temporarily until a replacement can be found.
