DHAKA, Bangladesh — President Hussain Mohammed Ershad was officially declared the winner Tuesday of last week’s controversial presidential election.
The Election Commission announced that Ershad had polled 21.8 million votes, or 84%, in Wednesday’s election to his 11 opponents’ combined total of 4.1 million.
Major opposition parties boycotted the election, contending that it would be rigged in Ershad’s favor. Diplomats and other observers said they believed the turnout was much less than the government had claimed.
