Wiesel Plans Moscow Appeal

BOSTON —  Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel said today that he will leave for the Soviet Union on Tuesday, a week after winning the Peace Prize, to try to persuade Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev to let Jews and dissidents leave the country.

“I would like to . . . see if it’s possible to find a common language. . . ,” the former concentration camp inmate said. He said that his weeklong trip to Moscow was planned before he learned he had won the Nobel and that he has asked for a meeting with Gorbachev but does not know whether it will be granted.
