Heavy fighting was reported on the central front in the Iran-Iraq War. Iran said that its troops captured an important hill 110 miles northeast of Baghdad and that 1,000 Iraqis were killed or wounded. In Baghdad, a military communique said that Iraqi troops later recaptured the hill and that the bodies of hundreds of Iranians were left lying on the battlefield. There was no independent confirmation of the accounts. Iran, meanwhile, said its jets caused “substantial damage” at Iraq’s northern oil field at Kirkuk, target of a reported Iranian commando raid earlier, but Iraq denied that enemy planes had penetrated its airspace.
