Security forces stormed rebel hideouts in the jungles of eastern Sri Lanka, killing 16 rebels, the government reported. Government sources also reported the imposition of a 17-hour curfew in the city of Batticaloa, 150 miles east of the capital of Colombo, for the third successive night after guerrillas exploded a series of bombs. The violence followed the killing of 15 Tamil civilians in a car bombing last week. Residents organized a three-day peaceful protest over the killings.
