DETROIT — Television evangelist Pat Robertson said today he is giving up his position as host of “The 700 Club” because of the demands of his political travels.
Robertson, speaking at a news conference before a speech here, said he will continue to appear on the program as a commentator.
Last week, Robertson announced he would seek the Republican nomination for President if 3 million voters pledged him their support.
Asked today if his appearances on the program conflict with federal regulations requiring equal time on television for political candidates, Robertson replied, “I have withdrawn as host of The 700 Club effective today.
“I’m not hedging on any rules whatsoever,” he said. “At the present time, no campaign is in full swing.”
Robertson said he will appear on the program no more than three times a week.
Robertson built a national following as host of “The 700 Club” and head of the Christian Broadcasting Network.
