Ex-Indonesia Aide Sentenced in Plot to Kill Suharto

JAKARTA, Indonesia — A former Cabinet minister was sentenced Thursday to 20 years in jail for an unsuccessful plot to assassinate President Suharto and set up an Islamic republic in Indonesia.
Mohammed Sanusi, 66, already is serving 19 years for subversion for conspiring with at least 10 other alleged Muslim militants to bomb three Chinese-owned businesses in Jakarta. The three bombs killed two people and injured 18 on Oct. 4, 1984. Judge Mohammed Hatta said the 20-year sentence would run concurrently with the previous jail term, in effect adding only one year to his sentence.
The prosecution had demanded a life sentence for Sanusi’s alleged participation in a plot to kill Suharto during the 1983 inauguration ceremony of a restored Buddhist temple in central Java. He was also accused of planning a grenade attack on the presidential limousine in Jakarta. Neither attempt was carried out.
