Reyes Still Has Two Weeks to Prepare For Fight Against Sims of North Hollywood

The last time lightweight Nery Reyes stepped into the ring, he was fighting on a little more than five hours notice.

When promoter Harry Kabakoff had a main event fighter drop out of his inaugural card at the Sheraton Universal Hotel last month, he hurriedly called Reyes at his San Jose home. Following a plane flight and a mad dash down the freeway, Reyes (17-7, five knockouts) showed up in Universal City then showed up his opponent, stopping Erick Madrid of Sylmar 25 seconds into the fourth round of their scheduled 10-rounder.

Reyes’ next fight should be easy. After all, this time he’s getting three weeks notice.

But he’s also getting Walter Sims (18-3-2, 11 knockouts) of North Hollywood. Sims too fought last month, knocking out Melvin Paul at 2:13 of the first round of a match that put Sims in the quarterfinals of a Forum lightweight tournament.

Sims and Reyes will meet in the 10-round main event at the Country Club in Reseda on Aug. 26. There will be six fights on the card with the first scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The night before, Kabakoff will stage his second card at the Sheraton Universal, with the main event also a 10-round lightweight match. Robert Cantu (11-5-3) of North Hollywood faces Mark Parea (9-1-1) of Tucson in the first of six fights. First bell will ring at 8 p.m.
