Visitor Has Good Word for Peacock

As we packed for our 25th annual visit to Palos Verdes Estates and its glorious peacocks (we just cannot think of one without the other), we anticipated another pleasure-laden vacation.

Instead, we are experiencing shock at the attempts to eradicate these long-established avifaunal residents of the community. I can remember long ago when many more of these birds roamed freely, playing a vital role in the early childhood experiences of hundreds of lucky residents. Many of the Palos Verdes traditions themselves have their roots in former mayors and council persons known for their affection for these birds.

I would hope that the few protesters who apparently find it difficult--because of the stressful demands connected with their life styles--to coexist with the peacocks, would relax in the natural beauty of the entire community with its learning experiences. I find it tragic that the children are being deprived of that sense of wonder that most of us adults have grown hardened to.

Palos Verdes Estates is widely recognized as a unique area with its citizens living in natural harmony with its colorful birds. Therefore, I leave this area with a heavy heart and pray that a positive meeting of the minds occurs soon to the benefit of this beautiful community and its tenured peacocks. They deserve total protection, not continual harassment.
