Dataproducts, citing the extensive cost-cutting measures it took last year, said it earned $2.5 million, or 12 cents a share, in the first quarter ended June 28, versus a loss of $19.4 million, or 93 cents a share, in the same period last year. The Woodland Hills-based maker of computer printers said its revenue fell 2.2% in the quarter, to $84.4 million.
Dataproducts said its backlog of orders on June 28 was $110 million, $5 million less than it was both at the beginning of this fiscal year and a year earlier.
In 1985, Dataproducts cut its employment, now close to 4,400, by about a third and closed plants in San Jose, Irvine and Puerto Rico.
