BRIEFLY : Moscow Makes Lasting Impression on Brinton

David Brinton, a member of the U.S. cycling team at the Goodwill Games, returned from Moscow over the weekend after competing in three events. The city and the experience, he said, were unforgettable.

“It was a lot of fun and very interesting,” Brinton said. “The people on the streets were fascinated by the American team because people don’t ride bikes in Moscow.”

The Americans were not surprised that the Soviets easily took five gold medals in seven cycling events.

“They were tough,” he said. “We didn’t go over expecting to win. Nobody really peaked for this event.”

Brinton, 19, was sixth in the one-kilometer individual race with a time of 1:06.33--almost three seconds behind winner Uldis Bremanis of the Soviet Union.

The North Hollywood resident also helped the U.S. team break an American record and finish fourth in the four-kilometer team pursuit with a time of 4:21.27.

Rizzo to Represent U.S. in Romania

Lisa Rizzo, who graduated from Hart High in June, will race Friday at the world junior track championships in Romania.

Rizzo, who twice won the Foothill League championship at 1,600 and 3,200 meters, will run the 10,000 meters at the preliminary meet. If she qualifies, Rizzo will travel to Athens, Greece, for the finals in the competition, which will be held later this month.

Rizzo has accepted a track and cross-country scholarship to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Jim Bonds Named to National List

Hart High quarterback Jim Bonds is rated among Max Emfinger’s list of the top 200 high school football players in the country. Emfinger’s high school rating service is recognized as one of the nation’s best.

Bonds, a 6-1, 185-pound senior, led Hart to the Coastal Conference championship game last season, completing 165 passes in 318 attempts for 2,252 yards. He also rushed for 380 yards and 9 touchdowns.
